FITNESS IS POSSIBLE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
|
The right attitude can see you through the holiday season and help you stick with your fitness goals. If not a regular exerciser, there's no time like Thanksgiving to make healthy changes in your life and start the New Year a couple of steps closer to your goals. Make 2007 the year you start without regrets and resolutions.
The holiday season is filled with friends, family, co-workers, cooking, shopping and celebrations to name just a few things. On the positive side the holidays are a time of happiness, gratitude and giving joy. On the negative side they can create stress and disrupt our lives time-wise and be a burden financially. The holidays are a challenging time and concern for dieters as well as die-hard health and fitness buffs. With the last of Halloween's candy still lying around, in rolls Thanksgiving. The holidays provide a good excuse for overindulgence for more than a sixty-day period. A new study conducted by the National Institute of health (NIH) shows that extra weight gained during the holidays accumulates through the years and may be a major contributor to obesity in later health. With childhood obesity on the rise, we need to take action now.
Deterrents to the healthy eating plan and normal exercise routine and benefits you've worked hard for months lurk at every door you pass.
The good news is that you can enjoy the holidays and literally "have your cake and eat it too" all by starting now with a good exercise plan.
- Start Thanksgiving with an "attitude of gratitude." Be thankful for your health and show it by continuing to exercise regularly. Be grateful that you can exercise. If you have a Pilates session package, gym membership, exercise equipment, or two able legs and a pair of walking shoes, use them and be happy that life has given you the means and ability to exercise! Haven't taken Pilates classes in months? Start now!
- Recruit a buddy and start Pilates sessions together now. Don't put it off!
- Look for and plan activities that your family can enjoy together during days off from school. If you are at home, try a family bike ride. Going away on a vacation? Pack those tennis racquets, roller blades and whatever else you can think of to keep your family moving!
- Put the television on to an exercise channel or buy a Pilates exercise DVD and have a family workout.
- Look for special events, races, and special Pilates classes. There are plenty of them out there at this time of year, many of them for good causes. Getting involved in a physical event for charity is not only good for your heart, it's good for your soul. Check the program calendar published by the city, school, or local businesses and health facilities including Parkland Pilates of Coral Springs. If you don't see it on the calendar at Parkland Pilates, write a note and suggest a specific class and date!
- Become the recipient of more positive energy. You've probably heard the saying, "What goes around comes around." If you are a regular Pilates class participant and want to maintain the discipline and drive to stick with your program through the holidays, sometimes you have to initiate the flow. For example if you notice someone looking leaner, more toned or has been making an extra effort to not miss classes, give the person a compliment. I don't mean a long drawn out conversation, a simple a short phrase of praise and positive feedback. If you want more positive energy you've got to give more positive energy!
- Write a note or Email to someone and say something nice. If you've read an article and enjoyed it, or found a healthy holiday recipe, why not post it on the bulletin board and let everyone know? Share something good with everyone.
- Have a specific plan and plan ahead. Put your Pilates session into your daily planner. Put your exercise clothes out in plain sight the night before. Every time you walk by them, picture yourself in class the next day. Not only that, picture how good you will feel when you have finished your Pilates class.
- Be ready for obstacles and excuses. Can't get to do your regular Pilates class that morning or evening? Substitute a different day or time. There are plenty of Pilates classes on the schedule, day and night!
- Skip the mall and shop online. Can't live without the mall? Make an organized list, shop one-stop, do it early and be done. Create more time to exercise. Choose to create your own success not failure. Remember, YOU are in control and have choices.
- Picture yourself looking stunning on New Year's Eve thanks to your hard work and Pilates training. Not only picture yourself looking better but feeling better come January 1, 2007 thanks to exercising your way through the weight-gaining season.
